BMW 1 series is vastly superior to most of the small family cars. BMW 1 series hatchback range has launched a new 2.0 litre engine and the horsepower is 129bhp. The car can sprints to 60mph in about 9.4 seconds and has a top speed of 129mph and returns 38.7mpg on the combined cycle. The car is also available in three 2.0 diesel engine model with 141bhp, 175bhp or 202bhp. All the three diesel variants offer strong performance and good economy.

The car is with superb body control, loads of grip and a balanced fee provided by the front-engines and rear wheel drive chassis is sure to appeal enthusiastic drivers. It has an impressively refined environment for a small family hatchback and the engines stay smooth and hushed and the gearshift is slick and satisfying.

The car has strong resale values as the other premium hatches and running costs are superb. Fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions are among the best in the hatchbacks. On every model there are Driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, plus traction and dynamic stability control and the car has long term reliability.

Audi A3 provides a good value for the entry level luxury buyers with the four door hatchback body style. Audi A3 has versatile interior space, enjoyable driving, availability of F1-style sequential shift transmission and excellent safety for a small car. A3 is Audi’s least expensive car and A3 2.0T is a pretty good bargain while considering the performance, handling and high quality interior. The standard feature of A3 are 17-inch wheels, dual zone automatic climate control, one touch power windows, a trip computer and 10 speaker audio system. There is a choice of four petrol engines and a dated 1.9 diesel with 104bhp is also available.

Audi A3 is with body control and grip. On base and SE versions, the ride is firm but is not uncomfortable. Running costs are competitive and there are same high standards of build as it is in the expensive models of Audi. Driver will be comfortable with the supportive seats and wide range of adjustment. The driver and front passenger have loads of space but for those above six feet can’t enjoy long journeys in the back.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso has two petrol engines but the diesels make more sense with its superior economy and pulling power. The C4 Picasso is smooth and composed filtering out all but most awful bumps at higher speeds. The parking is easy with the lightweight steering. The most striking feature of C4 Picasso is its classy interior. The standard features twin front and side airbags while the window airbags cover the first two rows. Another standard feature of the C4 Picasso range is the driver’s knee airbag. Stability control system is also available. The optional laminated windows and the dead locks boost the safety and security.

The cabin has an unconventional feel with a fixed steering wheel hub with centrally mounted instrument and the air conditioned controls which are positioned at the edges of the dashboard. Most of the drivers are comfortable with the switchgear as it is easy to use and with plenty of adjustment. It can seat five with comfort and the seats of the middle row can slide back and forth individually.
